Well it’s official; we have just witnessed the coldest spell in Britain for 30 years, with temperatures bordering on Antarctic proportions. Apart from the usual chaos associated with snow and ice grinding this country to a halt (why do they always run out of salt for the roads?), it has also spelt disaster for pole anglers. Quite simply, the conditions have rendered most venues either inaccessible or unfishable.

Try telling that to the real top-flight match anglers, though! These are arguably the most committed and passionate anglers out there and, for many of them, a bit of ice won’t stand between them and a day’s fishing. Never is this fact truer than with the two anglers we are with today, Des Shipp and Callum Dicks. Both have an international pedigree. Des, 39, is a full England squad member who commands a massive amount of respect wherever he fishes, while 21-year-old Callum has already won individual gold as an England junior and is now hotly tipped to break into the senior squad one day. These two Bristolians live, eat and breathe fishing and the fact that Gold Valley (Cold Valley would have been more apt!) is more than two hours from home doesn’t seem to bother them, either. So why were these two anglers so keen to turn out on such a cold and inhospitable day? Are they mad? We simply had to find out…
