I had been using my G-Max 1000 pole for 18 months and from the very first time I used it I loved it! It got a bit of a work out on its very first match at The Glebe where I managed 192lb! After that my confidence in this pole was very high. In the next 18 months this pole has not let me down, handling fish up to 18lb.
With all this in mind, when I got an e-mail asking if I wanted to upgrade to the new G-Max Match M1 it was not an automatic decision… but I did!
I picked the new pole up two weeks ago and spent all evening elasticating it ready for the weekend. Unfortunately 50mph winds put a stop to that. I chickened out as I didn’t fancy breaking it first time out!
So, I waited another week and finally got it on the bank. Why is it when you get a new pole it’s like you’re handling eggs? Anyway, I finally got it all put up and wow this felt good! The new finish slides through your hands really smooth – when you’re feeding just four maggots and a thumbnail amount of groundbait this is a blessing, as there’s nothing worse than bouncing your bait halfway out!
I used the pole up to 14 metres and I have to say it is an improvement on my old G-Max 1000, nicely balanced and a good response when lifting into fish. I also like the new Puller Slot setup, so I will be getting a few more of them! Another nice touch is that you get a few internal PTFE bushes to try, which are the same size but with different bores. The small bore is a great addition as this allows the use of lighter elastics on exactly the same length of top kits. For thicker elastics, you just swap out the bush.
All in all, I am really impressed with this pole so far. Roll on summer when I hopefully start really bagging with it!
